Expert Hair Care Advice You Can Trust
The internet is full of hair care advice — and most of it is contradictory. One blog says wash daily; another says once a week. One influencer swears by coconut oil; another warns it’ll ruin your hair.
We asked senior stylists with 10+ years of experience to share the tips they actually give their clients. Here are the seven that came up again and again.
1. Stop Washing Your Hair Every Day
Over-washing strips your scalp of natural oils, forcing it to produce even more sebum. Most hair types do best with 2–3 washes per week. If your roots get oily between washes, use a quality dry shampoo at the roots only.
2. Condition From Mid-Length to Ends
Conditioner on your roots weighs hair down and can make it look flat and greasy. Apply from mid-shaft downward, where hair is oldest and most in need of moisture.
3. Never Skip Heat Protection
This is non-negotiable. Every single stylist we spoke to emphasized this point. Heat protectant spray creates a barrier that prevents direct heat damage from straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers. Apply to damp hair before any heat styling.
4. Use a Microfibre Towel or T-Shirt to Dry
Regular terry cloth towels create friction that roughens the cuticle layer, leading to frizz and breakage. A microfibre towel or soft cotton t-shirt is far gentler on wet hair.
5. Get Regular Trims — Even If You’re Growing It Out
It sounds counterintuitive, but trimming every 8–12 weeks prevents split ends from travelling up the hair shaft. You’ll actually retain more length over time with regular maintenance.
6. Sleep on a Silk or Satin Pillowcase
Cotton pillowcases create friction overnight, leading to tangles and breakage. Silk or satin reduces friction dramatically, helping preserve your style and keep hair smoother.
7. Invest in Professional Products
Supermarket products often contain harsh sulphates and silicones that give the illusion of healthy hair while actually drying it out. Professional-grade products cost more upfront but use fewer per wash and deliver real results.
